Hi there! I've moved here from Sydney for a variety of reasons. I was fortunate enough to have a smooth transition into a job at Optiver as a derivatives trader having transferred here from the Sydney office and I have always wanted to live and work in Europe with a view to doing plenty of travel here.
But Amsterdam, specifically, is more special to me than just a convenient job transfer. My dad was born here and my grand parents lived here. My grandmother had a bustling life on the Sarphatistraat before the war and my grandparents lived together on the Beethovenstraat after the war and before moving to Australia with my dad in the 50s. So to me, Amsterdam is my opportunity to see where and how they lived and try to uncover some of their past.
My grandfather had a nickel factory in Amsterdam-Noord called Nedona (anoden - or dutch for anode - backwards). I've managed to track down the son of the man my grand father left the factory with, he still lives in Amsterdam, and have organised to catch up and find out all the details about what happened with it post war. I'll keep you posted..
Amsterdam feels like a small enough and laid back enough city to become familiar with and start to call home as I travel around here. The city is full of life and i'm really starting to settle in. I am aiming to mainly keep a photo blog of my journey in the Netherlands with a little text here and there, so I hope you find something here informative or enjoyable!
Please contact me if you're in town and need assistance with anything. I live on the Prinsengracht near the Anne Frank House and will do my best to help out.
Cheers
Andrew
